Did you know that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer? In 2010, 68,130 people died from Melanoma compared to 630 bike fatalities in 2009. One person dies of Melanoma every hour and it is estimated that 9,480 people will die of Melanoma in 2013. Scary, right?

Cyclists go to great lengths to stay out of danger and fight for traffic rights, so why not go to great lengths to fight for your own health? It's easy to take preventative measures, but you must be diligent and thorough.

Step 1 – Avoid riding at the hottest time of day

If possible, ride in the morning or at night when the sun is not at its hottest.  If you do ride midday, remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Step 2 – Sunscreen!!

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the average person applies less than half the recommended sunscreen! You should use about one ounce or a shot glass full. Apply sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, 15 to 30 minutes prior to being in the sun and then again every two hours. If you plan on sweating, use a water resistant sunscreen and apply more often.

Don't forget your lips! Use a SPF of 30 or higher lip balm and apply liberally.

Step 3 – Clothing Not Optional

Lightweight, loose weave clothing may let the heat and moisture escape, but may also let more sun through. Look for apparel that has UPF or SPF ratings or wear heavier, denser fabrics.

Step 4 – The Eyes Have It

Your eyes are just as important as your skin; don't forget to protect them as well. Invest in a good pair of sunglass with lenses that filter out harmful rays.
